Braves release Glavine, trade for a solid bat

I guess the Braves ain't messing around. They released 305 game winner Tom Glavine today and traded minor leaguers for Nate McLouth.

Braves GM Frank Wren is doing an interview right now during the game broadcast, and he says McLouth will be the club's new lead off man. He also says Tommy Hanson has been called up and will start Saturday, which The AJC has a piece on.

Said Wren: "We just needed, we needed something to kind of jump start us into the last four months of the season."

Colin Cowherd's take on Manny Ramirez's suspension was fantastic this morning.

Ramirez, by the way, was responsible for the single coolest thing I've ever seen on a baseball field that didn't include Hank Aaron, Greg Maddux, Dale Murphy, Sid Bream or Lou Gehrig.

I didn't mean to go nine days without posting

The Diamond Dawgs are really, really good. And that's awesome.

They protect an undefeated record Friday night in Tuscaloosa, will be in Atlanta Wednesday and back in Athens March 20 to start a four game home stand.

Coach Perno gets a raise

From Josh Kendall here at the paper:

Perno, the Athens native and former Bulldog player who just completed his seventh season as coach, was given an almost 50 percent raise and will earn $450,000 annually for the next five years under the new deal. His former contract, which was to run through the 2011 season, was worth just more than $300,000 annually.

Congratulations to Fresno State. They're awesome.

Fresno State: 102 in offense heading into the tournament, 60th in pitching,* and it looked like we ran into the Yankees.

Congratulations to them, they looked like champions. Tough loss for the Dawgs. God bless 'em.

Next year will be another odd numbered dip, but I expect the following year to return us to the NCAA Tournament and beyond.

If I'm Damon Evans, I make Coach Perno one of the highest paid coaches in the SEC, and I start addressing our facilities. We've got the coach that can take us to Omaha with regularity. Once you get here on a regular basis, it becomes easier to figure out how to close the deal.

They looked like Big Leaguers to me

How about the Warner Robins American Little Leaguers, winners yesterday of the Little League World Series on an 8th inning walk-off homer.

Let's go to Brent Musburger, who's seen a ton of these things:

"I've done so many great Little League games, and then you think it can't equal or surpass that. And then you come along with a game like this and suddenly, this might be the best of them all. I mean, it was very, very dramatic. ... I noticed the Warner Robins fans. They were growing increasingly quiet down there because they had to be exhausted. I mean, they had played four straight lose-or-out games, as I recall, and they were the underdog every game. The little team that could, they got it done."
