Razor thin at safety

With Bacarri Rambo injured and out for the rest of the Spring, and Marc Deas in a non-contact jersey, am I right that today's scrimmage featured only two scholarship safeties?

Both of whom struggled last year?

How desperate must our situation have been at inside linebacker to move Alec Ogletree, a 5-star safety, to linebacker this year?

Georgia football as a 3-2 501c3

This season is brutally tantalizing. Thoughts from the Lucid Idiocy Division of Analysis:

"I don't know that we gave the game away. I mean, we didn't have any turnovers. At least until they announced that, after further review, you could clear out of Sanford Stadium. How close are we to being 0-5? Not as close as we are to being 5-0."
- Dan Starnes

"If we got points for being in 3rd and 8, we'd be off the charts."
- Brett Unzicker

"Did you enjoy watching Kevin Butler play football? The only thing you can say about the defense is that they saved us from losing worse. If the offense plays good the defense can't. And if the defense is good the offense sucks. Were lucky to be 3-2. Count your blessings on that."
- Ryan Mohs

We're unranked for the first time since December 2006. Auburn looks fast. Tennessee's defense looks like a real problem.

We put as much speed and talent on the field as I can remember us having in the last 10 years. But if we don't take care of the little things soon, this season will slip past mediocrity into territory I'd just as soon not discuss.

What happened to our vaunted defensive lines?

These are the last two sentences of David Hale's main Georgia football story Tuesday:
Sophomore defensive end Justin Houston was named the SEC's defensive lineman of the week. Houston had four tackles, two for loss and a sack to become the first Bulldogs player to win the award since Charles Johnson in 2006.
Why not just stab me in a cheek bone?

Update from David Hale:
That's my bad -- should have said first DEFENSIVE END to win the award since Charles Johnson in 2006.
That changes things a bit. Now I'm just back to freaking out about our defensive end play, instead of the whole line.

Update your calendars: "Bloodiest war ever" set for Junish

I often wonder whether humankind is as advanced as we think. Or if God's just up there, saying, "Man, I really thought you guys would have figured this out by now."

My buddy Silver* is a "gun show guy." That means he spends his weekends at gun shows, pretty much anywhere within a day's drive, selling people rifle scopes and those little laser pointers that attach to pistols.

This was not his primary career choice. Let's just says he's been a victim of the rapidly un-expanding economy in a particular dying industry.

Now, Silver is a Libertarian. I don't think he has any problem with gun rights. But, not wanting to shoot anything, he doesn't own a gun.

A lot of people think President Barack Obama is going to take away their guns. Or at least make them more expensive. Or maybe give them to Muslim terrorists. I can't really remember what the chain e-mail said.

Some of these fears are obviously unfounded, some of them are probably pretty realistic.

Either way, folks are just buying up guns and over-priced accessories like crazy at these guns hows. You don't have to look hard for news coverage on this. Silver says handguns and assault rifles are particularly popular. When it comes to ammunition, he used the word "stockpiling."

And the people "stockpiling" all this ammunition sound like some real characters.
Silver: I was out having a cigarette and struck up a conversation with this one woman. And she told me, "Well, everything I've read is there's gonna be the bloodiest war ever in June or July."

Me: That's pretty specific.

Silver: Yeah. And I'm just thinking, "What are you reading?"

Silver: This other guy, he was from West Virginia and said he used to work in the coal mines with a bunch of black people. And he said any time black people talk and use their hands, they're lying.

Me: I guess that makes Obama a liar, right?

Silver: I believe that was the sub-text. It's just amazing the panic that's out there.

Me: Just think about this for a minute. All these people that you're meeting — this is America. They have more access to information and education than in just about any place in the world.
As an aside, the way Silver got into this gun show business (which is apparently quite lucrative) is he got laid off. But his boss didn't.

He said that every time he ever had a conversation with her and she meant to use the word "fiscal," she actually said "physical."

A question for lesbians

Women often go to the bathroom together.

Lesbians are women. Do lesbians go to the bathroom together?

Because I know I have no desire to be in the bathroom when my girlfriend is peeing.

A crack in Coach Richt's cool

This commercial came on last night during a Signing Day wrap up show.

Two things: 1. It's pretty difficult for me to imagine Mark Richt spending an entire day shopping for carpet. 2. What the hell is the deal with those apples?

Reshad to AJC: I haven't decided

UPDATE: Reshad says he has decided to stay. I think it's a good decision, and I'm glad he'll be with the team in 2009.
----
The news that Reshad Jones is considering, and may in fact be leaning toward declaring for the NFL draft, is not surprising. But it is disappointing. It is also misguided on his part.

I don't think there's ever been a player I was as excited about signing as I was Reshad Jones. If you want to field a destructive defense in Georgia, you've got to sign 5-star safeties out of Atlanta.

Reshad, stay in school for yourself. You need the extra year. And if you don't want it, I wish you good luck.

But I doubt a paycheck is going to teach you how to tackle.

Watch out for your water, 'cause it might get walked on again in 2009

As expected, Tim Tebow will return to Florida for his senior year.

To be honest, I'm kind of glad. You want to beat the best, and I'd like to see the Dawgs get another crack at Tebow.

Now, Percy Harvin and Brandon Spikes, those guys can go ahead and go to the NFL, though Spikes has apparently told teammates he'll be back.

2,700 pounds of upperclassman mean

"I think this is the best offensive line I have seen in 26 years of doing this. It is also one of the best defensive fronts we've had, although neither looked very good against Florida"

- Jim Hawthorne, LSU play-by-play man, in the current issue of Bulldawg Illustrated (subscription).

Georgia linemen, I do believe this season is in your hands.

Beat Bama

I got word of the blackout before I even got into my seat on the plane in Phoenix. I'd be lying if I didn't say it scares me. But, then, Bama already scared me. And I basically get worried about everything.

It doesn't change anything.

And one more Arizona picture for the road.
