Godspeed to the 48th

Macon holds parade for departing Georgia National Guard 48th Brigade.

Said Gov. Perdue, at the event:
“This is worrisome. They are defending America, defending Georgia. It’s a sad (feeling), but it’s always sad. That’s the price of freedom. They hadn’t signed up to be professional warriors when they first joined, but they are ... doing whatever it takes for us to be free.”

We cannot stumble when we are on our knees

- A church sign I saw this weekend, somewhere between Athens and Macon.
-----
It's summer. Spring practice has ended. Is there any way we can get Tony Cole some more eligibility so he can just take all our lumps for us?
-----
Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach on how difficult it is to control a bunch of college kids all summer long: "If you've got 130 church choir members, you know, somebody's up to something."
-----
How are holograms made?

Apparently, with a laser.
----
If you're one of the 5 people who haven't seen the Susan Boyle video from that British American Idol show, well here it is:

"I've never been given the chance before, but here's hoping that will change."

In other news, I briefly visited Clemson, S.C., last weekend.

Gym Dawgs: Dominant

What else can you say? The first university gymnastics program to win 10 National Titles. Five National Titles in a row. Head Coach Suzanne Yoculan retires as the best there ever was.

If you wanted to tell people what the most nearly perfect thing about Athens and the University of Georgia is, I think "The women" would be a fair answer.

And what are the Gym Dawgs, but the most amazing embodiment?

You simply cannot overstate what a bad-ass treasure the Gym Dawgs are to the University of Georgia.

How should the applause ever end?

Plan B: A reality show where he gets beaten to death in prison

Still, I'd watch this thing at least once. From The Chicago Tribune:
(Indicted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich) has agreed to appear on "I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here," a survival-style reality show set to air beginning June 1 on NBC, the network confirmed. The opportunity could prove a bonanza for the financially pressed former governor, given the show would pay him $80,000 a week, a source said.

Before he can ink the deal, however, Blagojevich would need permission from the federal judge presiding over his corruption trial to fly to Costa Rica, where the show will be filmed. Blagojevich's attorney told the judge Tuesday that the ex-governor soon would be making a request to loosen travel restrictions placed on him as part of his bail.
In a related story, if you're a federal judge looking to be accosted by an angry Chicago mob, have I got an opportunity for you.

"Facebook is the new newspaper."

- NBA Commissioner David Stern, to Dan Patrick today.

I think he was kidding. Still, it hits a little too close to the truth for this newspaper reporter. Perhaps, if I watched the NBA, I would boycott.

Alumni flag football game Saturday: Here are the players

The University has set up a flag football game for former Bulldog players, starting at 11:15 a.m. Saturday before the spring game.

The communications staff at Butts-Mehre was kind enough to email a list of the players.

The teams are named "Mack" and "Jack" after coaches Mack Guest and Jack Davis (not the artist), according to Mike Mobley in the communications department. Both are letter winners who live in Athens, Mobley said.

Awesome.

Sanford Stadium opens at 10:30 a.m. Bring canned goods.

Mark Fox: Georgia tie, good resume, right attitude.

You know how, before spring practice began, we were all a little excited about Joe Cox taking over at quarterback because he was "saying all the right things?"

Enter Mark Fox, per The Macon Telegraph:
"I can remember a conversation with a search firm a few years ago and I declined a chance to pursue a job," Fox said. "The gentleman asked why, and I said, 'It's not like it's Georgia."
And this is from Damon Evans, answering a question that probably began "Mark Fox? Who the hell is that?"
"We made a commitment that we were going to go through this and not rush to judgment on any particular candidate until we went through the entire process," Evans said. "Once we finished that process, Mark just stuck in my mind, and sometimes you just go with that gut feeling."
Good enough for me. Now go recruit Atlanta.

Widespread Panic, why are you still trying to kill me?

Athens Bureau Chief Brian Huff reports that Widespread Panic will tour this summer with The Allman Brothers Band.

The amalgamated schedule is on jambase. It looks like the closest they'll get to Georgia are stops in Charlotte and Raleigh on this swing of the tour:
10.03 Charlotte, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
10.04 Charlotte, NC Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
10.06 Columbia, MD Merriweather Post Pavilion
10.07 Portsmouth, VA nTelos Wireless Pavilion
10.11 Raleigh, NC Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion @ Walnut Creek
10.13 Knoxville, TN World's Fair Park
October 3 is the LSU game in Athens. October 10 is against Tennessee in Knoxville.

Band members should be beaten in the street for their continued disregard of the University of Georgia football schedule. Simply switch the Raleigh and Knoxville shows and add a date at The Landing in Jacksonville for the night before the Florida game and we'll be in business.

UPDATE: I absolutely continue to believe this schedule will continue to be filled in and there will be some crazy show in Georgia.

Build it without doors? Why would you do that?

My disdain for all things yellow aside, they just don't make commercials like this one anymore. The Adventures of Yella Fella, Part 8.

By the way, Great Southern Wood, makers of "Yellow Wood," was apparently begun by the children of an Italian immigrant in about 1971.

From their site:
In the Spring of 1907, a 29-year-old Italian immigrant named Giuseppe Reina left Cammarata, a small village in Sicily, in search of a better life for his wife and children. His search would bring him to America.

Attention Hippies: Go to Macon in December

The Big House, the Macon home members of The Allman Brothers Band lived in back in the day, will open as a museum in December, according to The Macon Telegraph.

Speaking of The Allman Brothers, they just finished a run at the Beacon Theatre in New York, which benefited the museum. Apparently J.B. and Jimmy Herring from Widespread Panic sat in.

Lucid Idiocy Athens Bureau Chief Brian Huff has provided a link to that show on panicstream.

Awesome: Spiderman saves autistic child

This may be the greatest spot news story of all time. From the French Press:
A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony. ...

"I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous," Mr Somchai told local television.

Update your calendars: "Bloodiest war ever" set for Junish

I often wonder whether humankind is as advanced as we think. Or if God's just up there, saying, "Man, I really thought you guys would have figured this out by now."

My buddy Silver* is a "gun show guy." That means he spends his weekends at gun shows, pretty much anywhere within a day's drive, selling people rifle scopes and those little laser pointers that attach to pistols.

This was not his primary career choice. Let's just says he's been a victim of the rapidly un-expanding economy in a particular dying industry.

Now, Silver is a Libertarian. I don't think he has any problem with gun rights. But, not wanting to shoot anything, he doesn't own a gun.

A lot of people think President Barack Obama is going to take away their guns. Or at least make them more expensive. Or maybe give them to Muslim terrorists. I can't really remember what the chain e-mail said.

Some of these fears are obviously unfounded, some of them are probably pretty realistic.

Either way, folks are just buying up guns and over-priced accessories like crazy at these guns hows. You don't have to look hard for news coverage on this. Silver says handguns and assault rifles are particularly popular. When it comes to ammunition, he used the word "stockpiling."

And the people "stockpiling" all this ammunition sound like some real characters.
Silver: I was out having a cigarette and struck up a conversation with this one woman. And she told me, "Well, everything I've read is there's gonna be the bloodiest war ever in June or July."

Me: That's pretty specific.

Silver: Yeah. And I'm just thinking, "What are you reading?"

Silver: This other guy, he was from West Virginia and said he used to work in the coal mines with a bunch of black people. And he said any time black people talk and use their hands, they're lying.

Me: I guess that makes Obama a liar, right?

Silver: I believe that was the sub-text. It's just amazing the panic that's out there.

Me: Just think about this for a minute. All these people that you're meeting — this is America. They have more access to information and education than in just about any place in the world.
As an aside, the way Silver got into this gun show business (which is apparently quite lucrative) is he got laid off. But his boss didn't.

He said that every time he ever had a conversation with her and she meant to use the word "fiscal," she actually said "physical."

Hey, Hey - We got coaching search news

Sounds pretty good, too. David Hale's got multiple, if anonymous, sources, quotes Damon Evans as saying nothing is imminent.

The time to leave a sinking ship is before it sinks, not during the salvage operation

The AJC says Zac Swansey and Troy Brewer want to transfer. I supposed that's to be expected with a coaching staff change.

But this is a little odd:
Swansey lost his starting job to freshman Dustin Ware the last week of January. He said he was more upset about the handling of that demotion than the demotion itself. He said the coaches never sat him down and explained why they were making the move or what he needed to do to try to get his starting spot back.

“There was a lack of communication, big time,” Swansey said.
Yeah, man. Maybe that's one of the reasons we fired those guys.

UPDATE: The Banner Herald says Brewer is staying and Georgia Sports Blog made the same point I made about Swansey, only they made it yesterday.

I didn't mean to go nine days without posting

The Diamond Dawgs are really, really good. And that's awesome.

They protect an undefeated record Friday night in Tuscaloosa, will be in Atlanta Wednesday and back in Athens March 20 to start a four game home stand.

Schedule here.

On the absolute other side of the Bulldog world, this debacle ended today with a 19-point loss.

The Russian Bear is from Canada, and other wrestling tales

My girlfriend is a reporter in Raleigh. And that's how I found myself in a converted basketball gym Saturday night in Clayton, North Carolina, watching wrestling matches with about 400 people and talking to a couple of professional wrestling icons.

For more than 30 years, Ivan Koloff was a scary guy that the crowds shouted down. He and his tag team partners wore the evil red of the Soviet Union.

But "The Russian Bear" is from Canada. His real name is James Perras. The Bear is a 60-something-year-old man living in North Carolina. He's more than a full head shorter than me and walks with one of the worst hitches I've ever seen.

He has an embracing smile. But there must be nights when his body is a knot of pain.

I met him Saturday night. And I heard other names I vaguely remembered from when I was a kid and my grandfather loved Saturday night wrestling. I saw faces that had to be worn out wrestlers I never recognized.

Even for the famous ones, the crowds had gotten smaller.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts was there. He looked the way you'd imagine. Large. The stringy, curly hair. The big, bushy mustache now gray. He had a middle-aged woman with him selling DVDs and pictures that were clearly printed from a home computer.

He was balding on the top. But, then again, he was always balding on the top. He was friendly, like an uncle. He smiled and had eight different markers with him for autographs. His T-shirt had a picture of a snake with a big, open, purple mouth on the front.

A line formed quickly when Roberts arrived. The first picture he took with a guy, he stood up and put his arm around him. And with a smile under that big bushy mustache he said, "Somebody's touching my but."

The woman to his side, the one accounting for the money, had glasses and a mullet. A newspaper reporter who had written a story about Jake years ago brought a copy of the article.

"I didn't know he'd make it back then," the reporter said. "You never know which ones are going to make it. You never know which ones want to make it."

The woman smiled. "They all want to," she said. "Let me just clear that up for you. They all want to make it."

Roberts was charming. He tried to guess kids names and asked them questions. He was cool. He should have been. It was $10 to have your picture taken with him.

The woman said he actually hates snakes. He has bite marks up and down his arms. His famous snake, Damien? There were more than 40 of them, she said, always bought or rented by the wrestling federation.

The crowd was something to behold. There was this massive fat guy. He must have weighed 450 pounds. All he did was sit in a chair against the wall and call people over to say hello and shake his hand. He seemed to know half the people there. I never saw him stand up in nearly 3 hours.

There was a guy there in Pitsburgh Steelers jersey. I noticed because it was a Kendrell Bell jersey. It looked like the guy's right hip was half-displaced the way he walked, and his right shoulder dipped far below his left. He had two young blond kids with him and a massive beer gut. He got to shake The Russian Bear's hand.

One of the women taking money at the door (the sign said $10 for adults, but they were taking $5) said her grandson is a local wrestler named "Sudden Impact" Louis Moore. It's his dream to go pro, she said.

Moore challenged The Bear to a match during one of the intermissions. The Bear had a better idea. He said Jake The Snake would handle this upstart.

"No," said Moore. "Anyone but that."

It was theater. A guy with a big black afro came out wearing a ripped American flag like a cape. He wore American flag shorts and American flag boots that said "Creed" on them. Like Apollo in Rocky IV, he came to the ring to James Brown's "Living in America."

Creed and his partner put on a high-flying act. It was legitimately impressive. A little different, I figured, than what "The Snake" had in store later on. Hell, he's in his 50s now.

We left before Roberts made it to the ring. My girlfriend had a deadline. Two no-name young guys were wrestling when we left. As I walked to the car, I could still hear the rumbling on the mat, and the roar of the crowd inside, loud through the gym's brown brick wall.

"The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

I didn't get his name. His partner was an old Indian guy people called "The Chief."

UPDATE: My uncle, whose father was a huge wrestling fan, just sent this note: "Don't you know you should consult your uncle before putting a picture of a wrestler in your blog and referring to him as unknown? Hell, everybody that's anybody knows The Barbarian."

You can buy Jake "The Snake" Roberts merchandise here. I don't think it's his own site, but Ivan "The Russian Bear" Koloff photos and DVDs are available here.

It seems like I've met an inordinate number of professional wrestlers over the years. This was a piece I did on Lex Luger.

Oh, Matt. You're moving to Detroit.

And I'm sorry, man. That's where hope goes to die a very cold death.

The Patriots traded quarterback Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to Kansas City today for a mere 2nd round pick, taking them out of the running for Stafford's services.

But that's not what makes it more likely the Detroit Lions will pick Matt Stafford in the draft. This is, from the bottom of The New York Times story on Cassel's trade:
AROUND THE LEAGUE The Dallas Cowboys acquired quarterback Jon Kitna to back up Tony Romo in a trade with the Detroit Lions for cornerback Anthony Henry.
That leaves three quarterbacks on Detroit's roster: Duante Culpepper, Drew Henson and Drew Stanton.

Facebook punches me in the face

Why must the Internet join with our basketball program to taunt me? Facebook sent me this message today:
Bulldogs fans less than three weeks until the madness begins! Create pools, talk hoops, and support your team by joining the 2009 Bracket Challenge!
I hope that will be relevant one day soon. I'm thinking 2011ish.
